Celebrating Our Cervical Cancer Screening Success at Falcon Medical Clinic

At Falcon Medical Clinic in NE Calgary, we believe prevention is powerful. Today, we are proud to celebrate the success of our recent Cervical Cancer Screening Quality Improvement Project — and most importantly, to thank our patients for being part of it.

Why Cervical Cancer Screening Matters

Cervical cancer is largely preventable. Over 90% of cervical cancers are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), and regular screening can detect abnormal cell changes early — long before they become cancer.

In Calgary and across Alberta, improving cervical cancer screening rates remains a key public health goal. Women and individuals with a cervix between the ages of 25–69 are encouraged to stay up to date with screening.

Our Goal

In partnership with Mosaic Primary Care Network, our team launched a focused initiative within Dr. Francis Aluh’s patient panel to increase cervical cancer screening rates.

At the start of our project in November 2025:

  • 210 eligible patients were due for screening

Our goal: Increase screening rates by at least 10% within 3 months.

What We Did

Using a structured quality improvement approach (Plan–Do–Study–Act model), we:

  • Identified patients due for screening through our EMR
  • Sent reminder text messages
  • Followed up with additional outreach when needed
  • Booked patients promptly for Pap testing
  • Coordinated referrals when appropriate

The Results — And They’re Worth Celebrating 🎉

Thanks to the participation of our patients and the dedication of our team:

Project Outcomes

  • 210 patients contacted
  • 28 patients booked and completed their Pap test
  • 13.3% increase in screening rates
  • Exceeded our original 10% goal!

This success belongs to our patients who responded to outreach, booked appointments, and prioritized their preventive health. Thank you for taking that important step.

Why This Matters for Our Community

Preventive care is a shared responsibility. When screening rates improve:

  • Cervical cancer is detected earlier
  • Treatment outcomes improve
  • Lives are saved
  • Our community becomes healthier

Our vision is not just to meet the city’s screening rates — but to match and surpass them right here in NE Calgary.

We’re Not Stopping Here

This project has now been adopted as part of our ongoing clinic process. Moving forward, we will:

  1. Continue regular outreach to patients due for screening
  2. Offer reminder texts and follow-up calls
  3. Expand awareness about screening options, including take-home HPV self-screening when appropriate
  4. Keep monitoring our progress

Our long-term goal: Have more than half of eligible patients up to date — and then continue improving from there.

Are You Due for Cervical Cancer Screening?

If you are between 25–69 years old and have a cervix, you may be due for screening.

  • If you received a reminder and haven’t booked yet — this is your sign
  • If you’re unsure whether you’re due — give us a call
  • If you’ve been putting it off — we’re here to make it easy and comfortable

Together, we can prevent cervical cancer.
